Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” earned $46 million in the U.S. last weekend, losing 68% of its grosses compared to the previous week, one of the most serious drops from Marvel Studios films. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for example, lost 67% and “Eternals” lost 61%.
The film’s box office total in the U.S. came in at $232 million, with a total of $498 million. In other words, “Love and Thunder” has already fully recouped its production budget.
Variety notes that the 68% drop in the second week indicates that the film never made it beyond the comic book fanbase, nor did it attract newcomers to the film universe. At the same time, it is noted that the film will still eventually collect a “decent amount,” but representatives of the portal do not make specific assumptions. However, the previous Marvel film, the second “Doctor Strange” at the box office collected 950 million – it is likely that “Love and Thunder” will finish at about the same level.
The film had its world premiere on July 7, 2022.
